What is the Canadian ETA?
The Canadian Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is a mandatory pre-travel requirement introduced by the Canadian government for visa-exempt foreign nationals — including Australian citizens. You cannot board a flight to Canada without one.
The good news is that the Canada eTA is applied for entirely online in a matter of minutes. Once approved, it is electronically linked to your Australian passport — no label, sticker or card required. It is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, and covers multiple trips to Canada throughout its validity.

Do Australians need a Canada ETA?
Yes — all Australian passport holders flying to or transiting through Canada are required to hold a valid Canada eTA before departure. It makes no difference whether you are visiting for a holiday, travelling for work, or simply stopping over at a Canadian airport on your way to the USA or elsewhere.
The eTA applies to air travel only. Australians entering Canada by land or sea face different entry requirements. Not sure if you qualify? Visit ETA Permits and check your eligibility instantly on the application page.
Good to know: Australia and Canada have strong historical and cultural ties — and Canada is a popular destination for Australian travellers, working holiday makers, and those visiting family. Whatever brings you to Canada, make sure your eTA is sorted before you fly.
